Meet Bianca, founder of SA Roots.
South African roots. A life abroad.
Hi, I’m Bianca Love, a South African who moved to the Netherlands in 2022.
SA Roots grew from something I wanted for myself: a way to celebrate where I come from while making room for the home I was creating. Moving abroad changed my everyday life, but it didn’t replace my South African identity. Instead, it added to it. That feeling is at the heart of SA Roots.
Making room for both.
Starting again in another country can bring excitement, opportunity and a sense of possibility. It can also mean saying goodbye to familiar places, learning a new language and finding your footing far from the people who know you best.
For me, building a life in the Netherlands has meant discovering new traditions while holding on to the language, humour and everyday reminders of South Africa. I wanted clothing and gifts that reflected that experience. Not just pride in one country, but the feeling of belonging to more than one.
When I couldn’t quite find what I was looking for, I decided to create it.
Two homes. One heart.
The “Two Homes One Heart” design brings the South African and Dutch flags together in a single heart. It represents the home you carry with you and the one you build along the way.
Other designs take a more playful approach: familiar phrases, shared humour and the meeting of two cultures. From Biltong & Borrelnoten to Dutch With An African Touch, each offers a small way to express a personal story.
SA Roots is for South Africans living abroad who want to celebrate their heritage without leaving their new lives out of the picture. You don’t have to choose one home over the other. There is room for both.
Rooted in community
Building a new life is not only a practical transition. It can be an emotional one too.
In 2025, I experienced burnout and was off sick for a few months. This was extremely humbling, because my South African work-ethic couldn't fathom needing to be off sick for that long. But my recovery has taught me so many valuable things about taking care of myself and my mental health. Which is why mental wellbeing is personal to me, and supporting mental health causes is part of what I want SA Roots to stand for.
On a quarterly basis, we donate 10% of our profit to mental health causes.
A little about Be Loving
SA Roots began as a collection within Be Loving, the creative business I founded in June 2026. The name is a play on my name and the spirit I want to bring to what I create.
SA Roots now has its own storefront, branding and a focus of its own: clothing and gifts for South Africans abroad. With many expansion ideas to come!
Professionally, I work as a Functional Designer, with a background in Communication Sciences and a love of improving user experiences. Creating these brands gives me another way to turn ideas into something tangible, personal and joyful.
Carry a little piece of home
Whether you’re choosing something for yourself or a gift for someone who understands the feeling, we hope you find a little of your own story here.
